Raine Sarmiento is a figurative painter born in Valenzuela City, Philippines. She began to draw at the age of five, and started winning art competitions at seven.After completing her BFA major in advertising arts in 2008, she worked for several advertising agencies as a graphic designer and contributed her illustrations to various magazines and a newspaper in Metro Manila. From 2013, she began to participate in group shows, slowly learned about the fine art career and started to consider pursuing it.Her love for painting figurative art was rooted from her old fascination with Renaissance Art, Baroque Art, Neoclassical Art and Art Nouveau. As a shy and secretive person she paints body poses surrounded by symbolisms instead of being in actual sceneries to express her artwork’s message—be it her trauma and other strong emotions, conclusions, dreams or secrets. Growing up, she was very fond of dolls, animation and video games and these later influenced her subjects’ features as well as her color palette. Through her paintings, she offers an intimate look into her dark, melancholic world.
